As a snappy title, Association Pour La Promotion De La Presse Magazine Gratuite d'Information lumbers somewhat leadenly off the tongue.

But this is clearly pas un problème for members of the APPMGI, the new representative body for the French free newspaper industry.

Formed earlier this week, the APPMGI will now apply for membership of Audipresse, an organisation launched in June with the aim of devising common readership and circulation measurement criteria across the French print media sector.

Separate readership surveys for magazines and newspapers - the norm in France for many years - will be abandoned and replaced by the AEPM, a single survey supervised by Audipresse.

The APPMGI will lobby Audipresse for the inclusion of free magazines in the AEPM survey as of January 2006.
