Computer giant Hewlett-Packard is to launch its first range of home television sets in the spring.

H-P is the latest technology firm to expand into consumer electronics, a market thought to offer better growth prospects. It follows Dell Computer's recent decision to offer a range of TVs and digital music players [WAMN: 26-Sep-03].

H-P will produce large liquid-crystal and plasma sets. Although each will be able to pick up TV signals, the firm's executive vp Vyomesh Joshi warned cryptically: "I wouldn't call it television."

Instead, the company sees its new products as part of a "digital content" system including photography, music and video.
