HIGH STREET BLUES HIT MAIL ORDER SECTOR

News, 01 July 1999

RETAIL REVENUES in the high street fell by 1.3% in May compared with 1998, reports the British Retail Consortium. Mail order companies were even harder hit, the BRC says, although high street price wars are unlikely to be the main factor affecting the home shopping decline: ‘[Mail order] companies believe that poor weather conditions were also a major factor in depressing sales - particularly in children’s clothing and footwear.’ Mail order prices, year on year, are generally either stagnating or falling, added a BRC spokesperson. Although the identity of the mail order sample was not revealed, the companies sur-veyed are said to account for the bulk of UK mail order sales.
