Granada Media, leading shareholder of British commercial television network ITV, is considering setting up a channel dedicated to Premier League soccer club Arsenal.

The TV offering would be in place of a planned £30 million investment in the club’s new stadium, as Granada’s finances feel the pinch of an ad downturn and massive losses at digital platform ITV Digital, which it co-owns with Carlton Communications.

As so often in recent seasons, Arsenal are behind Manchester United, whose own television channel MUTV (in which Granada has a 33% holding) has been running since 1998. Like MUTV, the Arsenal channel would feature games, interviews and breaking news.

However, the north London club is thought to be opposed to the scheme, eager to get the cash for its new £400m ground. It is also unclear whether such a channel would be a success, as Arsenal does not enjoy the global following of the likes of Manchester United.
