MOUNTAIN VIEW, California: Google is reported to be developing a basic mobile device to bring online services to consumers without access to a PC.

However, the web search leader declined comment on leaked reports in Europe and the US, which describe a low cost, internet-connected phone with a color, widescreen design.

Company spokeswoman Erin Fors did concede: "Mobile is an important area for Google. We remain focused on creating applications and establishing and growing partnerships with industry leaders to develop innovative services for users worldwide. However, we have nothing further to announce."

Industry experts believe a Google move into mobile would likely centre on a deal under which it would partner an existing handset maker and use the network of an existing cellphone operator.
