Global Retailers Prosper in 2003: Report

News, 13 January 2004

Global and international retailers extended their reach across the planet in 2003, according to Global Retailing 2004, the latest report from food and grocery industry research, information and education provider IGD.

Nine of the top ten groups in IGD's Global Retail League improved their ratings as indicated in the table below. This provides an interesting perspective as the rankings are not based on turnover alone, also taking into account the players' underlying global capability and strength.

IGD rates Carrefour of France as global numero uno, leading the USA's Wal-Mart by five points. Carrefour has operations in thirty-three countries and a strong domestic market position, seeing Europe as its 'enlarged home market' while it continues to develop scale in Asia, South America and the Middle East.

Wal-Mart, however, still rules the global roost in terms of turnover with sales of $245 billion (€191.04bn; £132.30bn) in the year to January 2003. International sales have grown to $40.8bn, while its George clothing brand is now available in six world markets. In Japan it has increased its stake in Seiyu to 37.7%, at the same time introducing Wal-Mart systems and completing its first store conversion in that nation.

Britain's Tesco is up six points although still in fifth place. 17.9% of sales are now delivered from its international operations and it holds leading positions in six of its operating markets - the UK, Republic of Ireland, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Thailand.

But despite the year's healthy growth, IGD ceo Joanne Denney-Finch warns: "Retailers seeking to develop scale in the emerging markets can no longer rely on expectations of strong market growth to deliver strong performance -- instead, they must ensure that they have world-class operational capabilities, combined with a high-degree of cultural awareness and the ability to understand new market dynamics’.
