NURNBERG: German-headquartered market researcher GfK is seeking to reassure its employees that a proposed merger with UK rival Taylor Nelson Sofres will not threaten their jobs.

Ceo Klaus Wübbenhorst has been at pains to rebut suggestions by WPP Group chief Sir Martin Sorrell that jobs would be at risk from an alliance between the two firms.

He expressed his concern for the wellbeing of the workforce to a German newspaper after TNS rejected an unsolicited bid from WPP last week.

Sorrell claimed a merger would create duplication of roles. But he also said he remained interested in doing a deal even if the two firms were combined.  

Wübbenhorst has written to GFK staff attacking Sorrell's remarks as "deliberate tactics", insisting that a union between the two "perfect partners" would result in the hiring of  "more, rather than fewer staff in the future ...

"All GfK staff in Nuremberg and all over the world may rest assured that this merger means expansion and innovation."
