Youth-oriented German TV station RTL II – part of Europe’s largest broadcast company RTL Group – intends to start up a new channel devoted solely to Asian Manga cartoons next year.

In addition, the station wants to break away from RTL’s ad sales house IP Deutshland to set up its own marketing venture, despite opposition from its parent.

RTL II chief executive Josef Andorfer revealed he has been tasked with the launch of the new channel by the station’s leading shareholders (which, apart from RTL, include Tele-München and publishing groups Bauer and Burda).

He believes the new offering will appeal to the viewing market between Super RTL’s target age group of 3 to 13 years and the teens/young adults catered for by RTL II.
