Autos manufactured by Adam Opel could soon be introduced to the US market by the German carmaker’s parent, General Motors.

In Zurich a GM spoke confirmed that the move was under consideration, initially of Opel’s successful mid-market Astra model. However, this is unlikely to happen until 2004 when the next generation of the Astra is due to be launched. Also on the cards for the US is Opel’s Zafira, a minvan Astra variant.

According to GM’s head of US car distribution Ron Zarrella, the Astra is "very well suited" to the American market. However, his Zurich colleague remained taciturn, saying only that plans were still at a very early stage.
