After a week of ‘will they, won’t they’, Barnes & Noble and Gemstar-TV Guide yesterday discontinued their merger discussions.

Having denied reports of negotiations last week, bookstore chain Barnes & Noble finally admitted Friday that it was talking to Gemstar, which specialises in on-screen TV guides.

However, in a joint statement issued yesterday, the duo stated that they now have “no current plans for a merger, acquisition or business combination”.

Gemstar also holds the patent on a system for producing and reading electronic books, the promotion of which is still under discussion with Barnes & Noble.
