Free newspaper giant Metro International is launching five new Italian editions.

The Luxembourg-headquartered (but Swedish-owned) company, which now publishes more than fifty Metro editions in 19 countries across Europe, North & South America and Asia, has added Bologna, Florence, Turin, Verona and Padua to its Italian titles.

The group's print run in Italy will reach 850,000 copies every day, making Metro the highest-circulation daily newspaper in the country.

Says company president and ceo Pelle Törnberg: "Our expansion in Italy reflects the success of Metro Italy as well as the demand from our advertising clients for national coverage."

The first Metro edition was published in Stockholm, Sweden in 1995.
