Hoping to ride on the coattails of UK digital terrestrial TV's Freeview success story, France will launch its own version of the service in March next year.

French prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin confirmed the plan to broadcasting regulator CSA (Conseil supérieur de l'audiovisuel), which has already given the go-ahead for music channel iMCM and Eurosport France to air on French dTTV.

General interest channel TF1 would have preferred a more sophisticated launch using better-advanced technology, but has nevertheless agreed to go digital sooner rather than later if required.

France recently scored disappointingly in the Digital Living Index report by Jupiter Research, which ranked European nations according to their technological prowess in areas such as digital TV and internet usage. The index was topped by the UK.
