Media magnate Sir Anthony O'Reilly (humble Tony O'Reilly in his former days as an Irish rugby football international star and chief executive of Heinz Foods) is on the prowl to expand his interests in Australia's about-to-be-liberalized media market.
Says Ivan Fallon, O'Reilly's henchman and ceo of the UK division of Irish-headquartered Independent News & Media: "We have been watching this [liberalization] law like a hawk for a long, long time. It could offer some very interesting opportunities. I think it is no secret the areas we operate in [in Australia] are regional newspapers, outdoor advertising and radio."
The Australian government intends to abolish the 'cross-media' rule that bars any one owner from controlling radio stations, TV networks and newspapers in the same region. Restrictions on majority foreign ownership are also expected to be removed.
