Florida Representative Calls on Congress to Fund $100m Tourism Ad Campaign

News, 15 November 2001

US Representative Mark Foley (Republican, Florida) plans to introduce legislation to Congress to provide additional federal revenues matching the advertising budgets of tourist-dependent states and cities – an estimated cash injection of $100 million.

Foley, who represents Florida resort Palm Beach – hard hit both by the economic downturn and fallout from the September 11 atrocities – proposes that the Department of Commerce should match the amounts spent on advertising in the year to date by all states and cities.

Although the legislation will be introduced as a separate bill, its sponsors are expected to lobby hard for its incorporation into the economic stimulus program currently under consideration by Congress.
