Net profit leapt 11% at the press and TV giant, whose flagship publication is USA Today. The gain is largely due to increased advertising sales.
The Mclean, Virginia, based group owns about 100 daily newspapers, twenty-one TV stations and Newsquest, a British newspaper unit. Third-quarter profit climbed to $310.2 million (€252.79m; £173.39m), from $279 million in the same period last year.
The internet portal reported surging profits, driven by increased advertising income, up 287% year-on-year to $253.3 million (€206.42m; £141.59m) from last year's $65.3m.Sales reached their sixth consecutive record high, up 154.1% to $906.7m.
Says chairman/ceo Terry Semel: "Our engaged audience enables us to deliver an unmatched set of advertising opportunities, providing deeper value to our marketers, and supporting the mantra that great products are the key to a great business."
The group raised its profits forecast for the full year to between $710m and $760m.
