The advertising activities of America’s pharmaceutical industry are being probed by the Federal Trade Commission.

In particular, the FTC is scrutinising letters sent by drugstores to customers containing promotional content paid for by drugs firms. The federal agency is investigating whether these missives breach laws against false advertising and medical privacy regulations.

One company under the microscope is Rite Aid, which revealed that the FTC had requested documents pertaining to refill reminders and educational information sent to patients. Another is Longs Drugs, which was asked by the agency to supply details of its marketing activities.
