Ford of Britain is to buy a stake in the MXR Radio Consortium, a group backed by Guardian Media, Soul Media, Chrysalis Radio, Jazz FM and Capital Radio.

MXR is bidding for the first round of licences for digital radios, and Ford intends to encourage the use of the new medium by fitting all new cars in the UK with digital radios from 2004.

“This represents the biggest positive step for the uptake of digital radio in the UK”, claimed MXR chair Phil Riley.
