Italian carmaker Fiat Auto announced yesterday that it is to plough over L100bn ($48.8m) into web-related projects over the next five years. Among its plans is an on-line car sales service for all marques including Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo.

Another major development will be the installation of telematics systems in all models. These will include in-car email, internet access and music download facilities.

Fiat also plans to explore possible internet synergies with General Motors, capitalising on the alliance signed by the two car giants earlier this year. Under the terms of the partnership, the US carmaker holds 20% per cent of Fiat Auto in exchange for a reciprocal 5% of GM.
