Rosie Boycott, the crusading liberal editor of the Daily Express, is said to be in negotiation over severance terms with the newspaper’s new owner, porn purveyor Richard Desmond.

The pair have publicly disagreed over staffing levels, redundancies and editorial content – to say nothing of Desmond’s management style.

Boycott’s departure would suspend the Sword of Damocles over a number of cherished issues, not least the paper’s political leanings – at present marginally left of centre. Also, given Desmond’s other media interests (which include OK! Magazine, a string of porn magazines and an adult TV channel), many believe that the paper’s quality of editorial is under serious threat.

Boycott’s contract, thought to be worth around £300,000 annually, has some twelve months unexpired.
