In a further twist to WPP Group's tribulations in Italy, sacked country manager Marco Benatti has called on local police to look into alleged office break-ins.

Benatti, who was fired amid mutual recriminations in the wake of alleged financial irregularities [WAMN: 18-Jan-06], has raised the stakes by involving law enforcement authorities.

The UK-headquartered group's Milan offices are reported to have been broken into twice last month. It is unclear whether anything was stolen, though Benatti says his belongings are still in the building.

He feels a police probe would remove any suspicion of his involvement in the incidents.

Benatti and WPP ceo Sir Martin Sorrell became estranged after disputing the the earn-out Benatti believed he was due under the terms of the ad group's acquisition of Italian media agency Mediaclub.

Private internal investigations revealed Benatti was a majority owner of Media Club. He denies any wrongdoing.
