McDonald’s has hired a Procter & Gamble veteran to take on a senior role at its US marketing operations.

Kay Napier, previously North American vice president for P&G’s pharmaceuticals and corporate women’s healthcare units, becomes senior vp–marketing for McDonald’s USA.

Napier is the first appointment by Larry Light, the burger behemoth’s executive vp and global chief marketing officer, who arrived at the group last month.

Light revealed he wanted to make use of Napier’s strategic background – an area in which McDonald’s has been found lacking.

“Quite honestly McDonald's has been, in certain cases, more tactical than strategic,” he commented. “Part of my responsibility … is to take a look at our marketing talent worldwide, not just in the US, and make it more disciplined and focused and more strategic-marketing focused.”

Light plans to make further appointments to this end, including a chief marketing officer for Asia and a worldwide head of market research.
