MUNICH: Six of Europe's leading newspaper publishers this week joined forces to launch an eight-nation web advertising network. Branded Premium Publishers Online it offers customized coverage of 40.2 million unique web-users.

Led by Germany's Tomorrow Focus and Britain's Associated Northcliffe Digital (a unit of the Daily Mail and General Trust), the network is set to expand to around ten partners by the end of the year.

It offers advertisers an integrated online network via its London-based sales office, with other operations handled from Munich and Hamburg.

Says Tomorrow Focus cmo Christoph Schuh: "PPO is a response to increasing demand from international media agencies for convenient one-stop internet advertising shopping.

"Well over 10% of our sales revenue in the past year came from international campaigns and the market is growing very fast."

Other participants are 01net / 01men (France), El Mundo (Spain), Telegraaf Media Groep (Netherlands) and Agora Group / Gazeta (Poland).

The venture will cause ripples, if not tidal waves, in the currently US-dominated market, putting the likes of AOL, MSN and Yahoo on yellow alert.
