NewsCorp-backed satellite broadcaster BSkyB has been sent a letter from the European Commission inquiring into its competitive practices.

The letter – the result, it is thought, of a complaint from terrestrial rival ITV Digital – concerns BSkyB’s exclusive deals with programme makers such as Discovery Communications, preventing them from providing certain channels to ITV Digital.

BSkyB responded by stating that “[the] complaint has no merit, and agreements with these channels have had no appreciable impact on the competitive situation.”
