European media duties for auto manufacturer Adam Opel, the German-headquartered unit of General Motors, are up for grabs.

The business, reviewed every three years, is thought to be worth around $300 million (€305m; £191m) in the four markets of Germany, Spain, France and Italy (the brand is not marketed in Britain).

Incumbent Universal McCann, which has held the buying brief for decades and added planning three years ago, is among the agencies invited to participate.

Other shops linked with the review are OMD, which turned down the invitation as it handles PSA Peugeot-Citroën, Carat in Wiesbaden and Düsseldorf’s Mediaedge:CIA, which has been asked to compete solely for the German duties.
