The longserving radio chief at UK media giant Emap has unexpectedly quit.

Tim Schoonmaker (45), who has been with the company for over twenty years, announced his resignation last week. He will step down next month, but continue to work with Emap in a consultancy role.

His decision surprised many media watchers. The deregulation of the UK radio industry is expected to lead to a wave of takeovers, and Emap -- owner of the Kiss and Magic networks -- is forecast to be one of the major players.
