FORMAL ADOPTION of a law that effectively preserves the mail monopolies of EU states for at least another five years has been agreed at a meeting of telecommunications ministers. At present, countries within the EU can limit domestic mail competition to items weighing 350g and above - or for which the postal cost is at least five times that of a standard stamp. These limits will be reviewed after 1 January 2003. Meantime, the EC has been instructed to submit new proposals before the end of 1998 for liberalisation of the postal sector.
