Erkki Liikanen, European Commissioner for enterprise and the information society, yesterday presented eEurope – a revised plan of action to complete over sixty legislative measures by the end of 2002.

Europe needed to move fast in readiness for the age of the mobile internet based on second and third generation mobile phone technology, Mr Liikanen said. However, the highest priority is still to increase competition and decrease lower local phone costs through "unbundling the local loop" that links homes to national phone networks.

In a second proposal, the EC is to launch a programme to increase European internet content between 2001 and 2005, with the emphasis on languages other than English.
