Dutch Government Plans Alcohol Ads Crackdown

News, 08 February 2007

HAGUE: The Netherlands' new coalition government says it will introduce legislation to ban all alcohol commercials on radio and TV before 9pm as it attempts to tackle drinking consumptions among the nation's young people.

The move has been welcomed by STAP, the Dutch anti-alcohol lobby, which has long maintained that self-regulation by the drinks industry does not work, and that advertising and consumption are linked.

Drinks makers have pledged to fight the proposals, describing them as "ineffective" and "window dressing".
