FRANKFURT: In a surprise move Nike has dangled a €500 million ($647.7m; £330.17m) carrot in a bid to snatch sponsorship of Germany's national soccer squad from local sportswear rival Adidas - the team's sponsor for over fifty years.

The US company's eight-year offer will almost certainly trigger a grudge match between the two sportswear sides, with Mammon behind one goal and nationalism behind the other.

Adidas enjoys what many believe to be an 'in perpetuity' deal with the German football association DFB, which it has supported since the nation won its first World Cup title in 1954.
