LONDON: McDonald's customers in the UK can browse the web while they dine on burgers and fries, as the fast food giant pledges free wi-fi access at its 1,200 restaurants.

The company is to invest £750,000 ($1.5m; €1.08m) in the service - which it already offers in more than half its 13,000 US outlets - to tempt customers away from its burger and coffee shop rivals.

A spokeswoman said customers have to pay between £5 and £6 an hour to use wi-fi networks in Starbucks and Coffee Republic, respectively.

McDonald's Restaurants ceo Steve Easterbrook said: "The launch of free wi-fi in our restaurants in the UK is an exciting move that we believe will further enhance our customers' experience when they visit us."

The service will be available by the end of the year.
