Morgan Stanley Dean Witter’s credit card brand Discover has launched virtual credit cards to aid e-commerce.
Emulating a recent scheme by American Express [WAMN: 08-Sep-00], the Discover Deskshop program generates a one-off card number for members making purchases, so that their real account number is never passed on to the e-tailer.
The disposable number then becomes exclusive to the web merchant in question, and can be reused if the cardholder makes further purchases from the same website.
The program also produces an online order history for card members.
