LONDON: Booze behemoth Diageo, the globe's largest vendor of alcoholic brands, achieved a 4% year-on-year uplift in operating profits to £1.306 ($2.56bn; €1.95bn) billion for the half-year to December 31. This compares with £1.26bn for the year-ago period.

Global revenues leapt by almost £100 million to £4.02bn, thanks to robust sales of key brands such as Baileys, Guinness, Johnnie Walker and Smirnoff.

Comments ceo Paul Walsh: "Excellent performances in North America and international, and unchanged profits in Europe, delivered double-digit underlying earnings growth. Our spirits brands, especially scotch [whisky] where net sales grew 11%, did particularly well, benefiting from increased investment in marketing."
