Deutsche Post has announced plans that effectively spell the end as discrete entities for its online units – currently running at a loss. They will either be sold to third parties or integrated into the parent organization.

Explains Deutsche Post eBusiness chief executive Clemens Beckmann: “Deutsche Post eBusiness is to be turned into a consultancy firm with a focus on the digitalization of businesses, processes and products within the Deutsche Post group.”

The online subsidiary, which presently employs a staff of 160, is expected to contribute a surplus to group funds once the revamp is completed in 2003.

However, the German postal leviathan – Europe’s largest – is not entirely quitting the cyber-sector; its risk capital offshoot Deutsche Post Ventures will maintain a ‘technology window’ to monitor investment opportunities in the sector.
