ROUND ROCK, Texas: Flagging sales at Dell Computer have prompted plans to open retail stores in the UK, after earlier this year abandoning its two-decade exclusive direct sales policy.

Dell yesterday (Tuesday) unveiled a deal with Chinese electronics retailer Gome to shift its products in 160 cities. It already sells through Wal-Mart stores in the US.

The company's change of direction aims to claw back ground it has lost to rival Hewlett Packard, whose PC shipments are thought to have risen 28% in the first quarter of this year.
