THE COMMERCIAL USE of electoral roll data is to be examined by the Data Protection Registrar following mounting complaints from the public. A consequence of the review may be that marketers will have to obtain prior permission to use the data. Another possibility is the omission of residential addresses from those versions of the roll that by statute must be publicly available for sale. Either option could be disastrous for the direct marketing industry.
