A SEPTEMBER LAUNCH for a new mass-market web portal devoted to women and their interests is planned by the Daily Mail & General Trust, holding company for the Daily Mail, Evening Standard and the Mail on Sunday. Provisionally branded CharlotteStreet.com, £5m has been budgeted for the project’s first year of operation. Aiming to create a ‘community for affluent and aspirational women’ [English translation: deliver a lucrative advertising segment], the venture does not plan to emulate Fleet Street’s redtops as a free ISP. Said financial director Peter Williams: ‘The Daily Mail is a key vehicle for addressing the women of the nation. We’d like to do the same thing on the internet.’
