Websites belonging to traditional retailers topped a poll of consumer preferences conducted by Visa UK for its first ever online Awards Programme.

Of the nine awards on offer, five went to sites operated by ‘old economy’ retailers while four were garnered by pure-play operators. Leading the pack with the greatest number of votes was GUS-owned high street catalogue store chain Argos, top gun in three of the nine categories.

A panel of judges assembled a shortlist of candidates which was then put to an online consumer vote. In all, 42,000 regular e-shoppers cast their votes during the period January 11 - February 11.

Commented Andrew Pindar, the British government’s e-envoy: “The sheer number of voters for the Visa e-tail awards demonstrates the speed at which UK consumers are realising the benefits of shopping online.”
