BEIJING: Increasing affluence is fuelling a boom in the desire to drive, according to latest figures from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, which show passenger car sales climbing 17.4% year-on-year during the first five months of 2008.

CAAM predicts that national auto sales will exceed ten million units in 2008, which would represent full year growth of 14%.

Sales of passenger cars, SUVs and multi-utility vehicles in May totalled 564,600, up 16% compared with the same month last year, and higher than April's 11% growth.
