Center for Disease Control Campaign Curtailed to One Year

The US government’s Health and Human Services secretary Tommy Thompson has quashed plans by the Atlanta-based Center for Disease Control to extend its $125 million advertising and public relations drive targeting child obesity beyond this year.

Only days after the Center began offering agencies five-year contracts for the duties [WAMN: 09-Apr-01], Thompson revealed that the campaign would only receive funding for one year.

“There is no question that’s a good program,” commented Thompson after unveiling his budget. “The question is, we think we can use that money better in community health centers. And so we made the decision of putting it into community health centers.”
