Canada Clamps Down On Telemarketing

News, 25 May 2004

Canada is the latest market to target telemarketers with stringent new regulations.

Under the rules telemarketers must act immediately if customers make a "do-not-call" request and give them a code number as confirmation.

Telemarketers must also give customers the option of being removed from all their databases.

The rules, issued by industry regulator, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunication Commission, come into force in October.

The commission decided against a national "do-not-call" system on cost grounds.
