THE LATEST RAJAR figures show commercial radio retaining its collective lead over the BBC with a 49.4% share of listeners against the BBC’s 48.5%. The Beeb, however, still boasts the most popular individual stations: Radio 1, commands a weekly reach of 9.76 million - 276,000 up on the same period last year - with Radio 2 in second position, despite a slight fall both in share and reach.. The most successful commercial station remains Capital FM, despite a reduced share from 16.6% to 15.5%. The impact of ex-Sun editor Kelvin MacKenzie on Talk Radio’s listening figures is too early to measure, but Chris Evans’ Virgin Radio has lost listeners nationally whilst marginally expanding by 44,000 to 1.11m in London.
