ATLANTA: Cable news broadcaster CNN Worldwide is to invest almost $10 million (€6.8m; £4.9m) globally, aiming to increase its its cadre of correspondents and produce more of its own reports.

The Time Warner-owned operation is set to add up to sixteen correspondents to its 150-strong team, and will focus on expanding its bureaux in the United Arab Emirates, as well as hiring more staff in Afghanistan, India, Malaysia, Nigeria, Poland and Mexico and elsewhere.

The move follows an announcement two months ago that CNN would not be renewing its content agreement with Reuters, and will instead focus on improving its own resources.

Declares CNN evp Tony Maddox: "Owning the content we broadcast, publish and make available to affiliates and other platforms is the backbone of this business."
