The airtime sales operations of Channel 4 and Channel 5 may be merged following initial talks between the two companies.
Under current Independent Television Commission rules such a merger is forbidden; but this would change if the proposed merger of Carlton either with United News & Media or Granada gets the green light from competition regulators.
Channel 5 chief executive David Elstein is playing down a sales merger as merely a theoretical possibility, although conceding: "If the rules were to change, we would look at it."
