US television network CBS is planning to broadcast three episodes of its latest drama series on the internet.

The Viacom-owned broadcaster will make the Threshold programs available online free for three days after their showing on TV. The aim is to build a bigger television audience for the show and increase visitors to the website.

Says Nancy Tellem, president of the CBS Paramount TV group: "We continue to seek and identify new ways in which traditional media and new media can work together to help each other's respective businesses."

CBS is following rival ABC network, which plans to sell episodes of its top-rated Lost and Desperate Housewives programs. These will be available for download via Apple's iTunes store one day after their debut at $1.99 (€1.64; £1.12) apiece.
