International media planning and buying agency Carat, part of the UK-owned Aegis Group, has taken a controlling stake in Strategic Planners International of Tokyo.
The Tokyo-based shop, which specialises in strategic media planning, is Japan’s first (and sole) independent in a market otherwise dominated by a small cabal of Nippon’s ad agencies. It’s client portfolio includes Adidas International, Nippon Lever, Volkswagen, Walt Disney and Warner-Lambert. It will rebrand as Carat SPI KK.
Says Aegis CEO Douglas Flynn: “We will not undermine the unique positioning of Carat SPI, but on the other hand, we will be seeking ways to expand our presence in the market through co-operation with major Japanese agencies or other innovative means.”
