High speed, broadband web access among US home surfers rose 148% between December 1999 and December 2000, according to Nielsen/NetRatings.

This brings the total number of domestic web users with high-speed access – including LAN, ISFN, cable modems and DSL connections – to twelve million, as compared to 5m a year previously.

The research company attributed much of the swift rise in broadband to streaming media (such as live online video or audio broadcasts), which has encouraged surfers to switch to high speed connections.
