LONDON: UK communications regulator Ofcom confirmed Friday that 4 Digital Group, a consortium led by publicly-owned commercial TV broadcaster Channel 4, has won the franchise to launch ten new national DAB (digital audio broadcasting) stations.

C4 will run three of the stations itself, while the remaining seven channels, one of which, targeting children, will be operated by the Walt Disney company's UK arm. Two other channels will be directed at women.

Additional services will be designed for transmission via cellphones.
