Britain's commercial radio industry on Wednesday reported record advertising revenues.

Figures for the third quarter reached £158.7 million ($293.2m, €226.8m), including £90.2m from national advertisers, according to the UK's Radio Advertising Bureau.

Sponsorship and promotions attracted investment to the tune of £24m in Q3, a 15.2% share of the total revenue.

The commercial radio sector as a whole recorded a strong performance over the past twelve months as revenue soared year-on-year to £632.7m, growth of 8.6% in the period ending September.

Among the top advertisers are the government's Central Office of Information, telecoms company Hutchison 3G and car manufacturer Vauxhall, the British arm of US giant General Motors.

The RAB reports automakers as the biggest radio ad spenders during the quarter, using the medium for branding campaigns.

Says the RAB's Lynne Springett; "Many advertisers are already taking advantage of radio's proven ability to increase awareness and drive sales, and we're looking forward to seeing more of them utilising its strengths as the brand conversation medium."
