Britain’s Press Complaints Commission has announced its new chairman: Sir Christopher Meyer, currently the UK’s ambassador to the United States and one-time press secretary to John Major when the latter was prime minister.

Meyer, 58, will take over from Lord John Wakeham, who resigned in February over his links with Enron. Since Wakeham’s departure, the PCC has been chaired on an interim basis by Professor Robert Pinker, the body’s privacy commissioner.

Subject to the approval of the Foreign Secretary, Meyer will take up his post next spring.
