Reports earlier this week that Mediaset, the TV group controlled by Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, is participating in the auction of Germany’s KirchMedia have swiftly been rebutted.
It was believed that Berlusconi’s empire had joined a consortium of US billionaire Haim Saban and French TV group TF1 to bid for KirchMedia, whose assets include movie rights and a controlling stake in leading German television broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1 [WAMN: 22-Oct-02].
Such speculation was hastily denied. “Mediaset group has not concluded any agreement to enter the TF1–Haim Saban consortium,” it declared.
However, the group refused to rule itself out of the bidding altogether, adding that it was interested in all options concerning the sale.
